Tears of Metal Version Mismatch & Crossplay Fix

Fix Tears of Metal crossplay version mismatches by using Paper Cult's Steam Crossplay Beta branch, checking patch scope and separating network issues from branch issues.

Updated Patch: 0.11.57863

Quick summary

  • Latest normal Steam version verified here: 0.11.57863, released August 1, 2026.
  • Mixed-store crossplay: use the Steam branch named crossplay.
  • Tradeoff: the compatibility branch can receive updates later than normal Steam.
  • A matching branch can fix a version mismatch; it cannot prove that a separate relay, desync or invite problem is solved.

How to switch to the Crossplay Beta branch

  1. 1

Open the game in your Steam Library

Do not launch the game yet. Find Tears of Metal in the Library list.
  2. 2

    Open Properties

Right-click Tears of Metal and choose Properties.
  3. 3

    Open Betas

Select the Betas section in the Properties window.
  4. 4

    Select crossplay

Choose the branch named crossplay. This is the exact branch name in Paper Cult's developer instructions.
  5. 5

Let Steam finish the branch update

Start the game only after Steam has completed any required download, then compare the displayed version with the rest of the party.

Why the branch exists

Paper Cult explains that Steam updates can ship before the same patch receives approval for Game Pass and the Windows Store. The Crossplay Beta branch is maintained to match that store build. When the Game Pass patch ships, the developer says the compatibility branch is updated as well.

That creates a deliberate tradeoff:

Normal Steam versus Crossplay Beta

Normal / latestReceive the newest Steam patchOfficial 0.11 notice says crossplay compatibility is temporarily disabled
crossplayMatch the Game Pass / Windows Store versionCan trail the normal Steam branch by a patch

Save-file warning: historical scope

The developer's July 28 branch post warned that the then-current older Crossplay build did not yet contain the safer save-recovery pipeline and recommended duplicating this file before staying on that version:

C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/appdata/locallow/paper cult/tears of metal/SaveData_ToM.txt

What patch 0.11 does not fix

Paper Cult says version 0.11 includes no networking changes. The studio was still testing networking optimizations, especially for players connecting through distant relay servers. Switching to a compatible version can resolve a version mismatch, but it is not evidence that desynchronization, freezing or a relay problem has been fixed.

Which Steam beta should I choose for Tears of Metal crossplay?
Choose the branch named crossplay. That is the exact name in Paper Cult's developer instructions.
Will the Crossplay Beta have the latest Steam patch?
Not always. Paper Cult says the branch matches the Game Pass version and may be one Steam patch behind until store approval is complete.
Does switching branches fix every co-op problem?
No. It addresses version compatibility. Paper Cult separates networking and relay-related desync work from the 0.11 patch and says that patch contains no networking changes.
Where is the Tears of Metal save file?
Paper Cult's July 28 developer post gives C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/appdata/locallow/paper cult/tears of metal/SaveData_ToM.txt. The associated missing-recovery warning was specific to the older branch available at that time.
